Ledesma: A real "Quixote"
Last fall, Puerto Rico’s
most famous Tenor since Antonio Paoli made his debut in Westchester: Jesús Quiñones Ledesma sang with the Performing Arts Society in
Ruggiero Leoncavallo’s I Pagliacci. He was
greeted with public as well as critical acclaim for his powerful voice and
interpretation. Ledesma, the founder of APTEL,
one of Puerto Rico’s primary Opera companies – with several famous American
singers – will perform the veristic duo, Cavalleria Rusticana
and I Paglicacci, Aug. 18-19 in Puerto Rico.
In this outstanding
cast, headed by Ledesma’s Canio,
will be the American dramatic soprano, Margherite
Ruffino, who gained great reputation as one of
the largest soprano voices since Eileen Farrell. Miss Ruffino’s famous interpretation of Santuzza, in Pietro
Mascagni’s opera Cavalleria Rusticana,
has been heard in many of the major U.S. cities. Joining Miss Ruffino and Ledesma
is the Metropolitan Opera’s Ryan Edwards, who will sing Tonio in I Pagliacci.
Edwards, a young lyric baritone, has been assigned several major roles
with the Met since his debut two seasons ago.
Westchester’s own Franco
Gratale will be returning to Puerto Rico to
serve as stage director for this double bill. His recent successes with the
Performing Arts Society last season help to make that season the most
successful of that company. Maestro Joseph Rescigno
of Manhattan will conduct these performances. The remainder of the casts will
be filled with native singers and members of Aptel.

L. Cevetillo, Westchester Rockland Newspaper:
"Tenor Ricardo Ledesma’s debut in the
role of CANIO eclipsed the memory of all other CANIOS since the
days of Mario del Monaco."
Carroll Schwartz, Opera News
"Pagliacci was made notable by the New York debut
of tenor Ricardo Ledesma as CANIO.
His voice at full volume has impact and vitality, but he also knows how to sing
pianissimo and can shape a phrase expressively."
